Chiropractic and asthma

Do you or your child suffer from asthma? We understand that asthma is a very scary condition and it has a large impact on you and your child’s quality of life. Breathe gives us life, when that’s taken away it is terrifying.

Asthma occurs when the passageways that bring air into the lungs become constricted. As the airways “close down” it becomes harder and harder to breathe often producing the characteristic “wheezing” sound. But what causes the airways to do this? There are many different “triggers” for asthma in individuals. For some it’s allergies, for some it’s exercise. However, there is one common theme that involves the body having a “hypersensitive” reaction leading to constriction of the airways. Some trigger causes the nerves to stimulate the airways to constrict when they should remain open. There is improper communication from the nerves to the lungs leading to this “hypersensitive” reaction.

Here is where chiropractic can help. By assessing the nervous system for dysfunction and using specific, targeted adjustments, we can work to improve the communication between the nervous system and target organ (in this case, the lungs). Over time, this improves the hypersensitive reaction. Additionally, improving the mechanics of the upper back allows for more lung expansion and better breathing. So chiropractic helps asthma in two ways. First, better nerve communication to the airways. Second, better breathing mechanics. Most importantly, we get to enjoy more days full of air and fun and fewer days fighting for breath.
