why you shouldn’t pop your own neck

DO NOT POP YOUR OWN NECK! I know the urge is strong, but please don’t do it!

Popping your own neck may feel good temporarily, but it leads to structural changes that cause issues down the road. First, it stretches the supporting ligaments in your neck. These ligaments are critical for providing support for your neck and stabilizing the bony structures. Second, you predispose your neck to hypermobility. When you pop your own neck, you are moving the segments that are already mobile. With chiropractic adjustments, we target the dysfunctional segments that are locked down. So, when you pop your own neck you make your subluxation patterns worse by creating hypermobile segments while enforcing restrictions at the subluxated joints. Third, you are turning and torquing your neck in abnormal positions which can pull and press on the nerves traveling through your neck leading to “pinched nerves” and other issues.

If you are having the urge to pop your own neck, that is your body’s way of telling you to go in and see a chiropractor.
