Chiropractic and torticollis

Torticollis is a condition that develops when the SCM muscle (sternocleidomastoid) tightens up on one side of the neck. As this muscle tightens, it leads to the head favoring one side. Torticollis is most common in young kids. Usually, torticollis develops as a compensation for other structural issues in the bones of the neck.

As a chiropractor, we work to address the underlying structural issue that is causing the SCM muscle to tighten up. Commonly, we find a subluxation in the upper neck that is the root cause of the problem. Usually, this develops due to abnormal position in the womb or invasive birth interventions (ex: forceps, vacuum, C-section). It is important to bring your child in right away if you notice signs of torticollis. Using gentle, specific adjustments, we help restore proper structure and function to the upper neck which allows the SCM muscle to relax. The sooner we are able to start care, the faster the recovery!
